Seeking New Workout Approach

I’m looking for advice on how to reset my weight training routine. After four years of steady lifting, a recent move has limited my gym access, which has affected my progress and motivation. The gym at the local university is affordable but often closed or unavailable, and I can’t drive to another gym or set up a home one. Weight training has been crucial for my mental health, so I am struggling to find a new exercise approach. Any tips for staying on track when consistency is difficult would be constructive.

It’s frustrating when the gym is closed, but other activities offer similar benefits. Prepare a backup plan, like packing a running bag, to avoid disappointment when you can’t access the gym. Hopefully, this situation will improve soon!

I will have a backup bodyweight or band workout for gym days just in case. Thanks!

Consider building a home workout routine with minimal equipment like a pull-up bar, resistance bands, and dumbbells. Calisthenics, which you can start without any equipment, is a great option. Check out Iron Wolf for simple routines. While it’s different from weight training, it can enhance your overall athleticism and give you a similar endorphin boost.

I appreciate the suggestion! I will look into that person; it’s always helpful to have guidance from others.

Could you share why a home gym isn’t a possibility for you?

The pleasure of switching off your mind for a while, lol!

Unfortunately, there’s no room.

Do you have any available space for a few dumbbells, a pull-up bar, and perhaps some resistance bands? With just this compact equipment, you can perform a wide range of effective workouts that can help you maintain your fitness routine and build strength right at home! It’s surprising how much you can achieve with such small tools!

I have resistance bands, but figuring out how to use them effectively can be tricky! I have focused on barbell training, but I might try substituting dumbbells when the gym is closed. Any tips on where to find them? After the lockdowns, it’s been hard to find dumbbells and kettlebells, and I might be looking in the wrong places.

You can find dumbbells at thrift or second-hand stores without spending a lot; with patience, you will eventually find what you need.

Great suggestion! I wouldn’t have considered checking thrift or second-hand stores. Thanks!

I check Facebook Marketplace for great deals, and you can also fill gallon jugs with water for a quick kettlebell alternative.

Those are both awesome ideas, thank you!

As a personal trainer, I recommend getting a door anchor for your bands, quality resistance bands, a body bar, and kettlebells. You can use the body bar with kettlebells to create heavier weights. This setup has worked well for my clients and me at home.

Additionally, consider redefining what a successful workout means for you. Shifting your perspective can help boost your confidence and enjoyment in your workouts.

A body bar is a great idea! I am struggling with band squats, and a bar would help. I will look into that. I also need to reflect on my goals since things have changed. Thank you!

I can relate to your feelings of frustration when routines change unexpectedly. You should be proud of building a habit that feels like part of your identity!

I recommend exploring calisthenics, as many people have successfully built muscle with bodyweight exercises. There are plenty of resources online, and it could be a great alternative when you can’t get to the gym but still want to challenge yourself.

Good luck, and I hope you discover something new that you enjoy!

Thanks for the suggestion and encouragement! I have enjoyed bodyweight workouts recently, as they really push me. If I can find some programs to guide my progress, I think it could work. I also appreciate the positive framing of this challenge; looking for something I love as much as weight training feels much less daunting than trying to replace it.

I don’t have specific tips on progression, but I recommend adding bodyweight exercises and yoga. Movements like figure 4 squats and crow pose can offer a similar satisfaction to powerlifting due to their challenge and the sense of accomplishment in mastering them.
